Pine River Shares and the Garden Club in Bayfield are working together more closely than ever, and we’re so excited! It’s really no surprise — the two groups have a lot in common. We enjoy getting together to share food, seeds, and ideas. We don’t mind getting our hands dirty. But most of all, we LOVE fresh fruit and veggies!

This year we’ll be working on three programs:

The Garden Contest: Five lucky families will win a straw bale garden, plus some help from us to get it going! Entries are accepted until March 31st; call Pine River Shares to find out more.

Plant-A-Row: Both groups are encouraging local gardeners to plant a little extra this year to share with Pine River Valley families. Pine River Shares will use the produce in the Family Food Project, and we are eager to add it to the cans and jars of non-perishables.

School Gardens: The Garden Club is working with at least one local school to renovate the campus garden and teach the kids to grow food. Pine River Shares volunteers will provide muscle power as needed.

If you love garden-fresh food too, connect with us! You can join any of these projects, or help in other ways. We have a feeling we may need to hold some food preserving sessions late this summer, so if you have a canning vat and jars, or a dehydrator, or just the desire to help, call us!
